VenaSeal (Medical Adhesive Closure)

VEIN TREATMENT & ADHESIVE CLOSURE

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive vein treatment that uses medical adhesive to close a diseased superficial vein. For selected patients with venous reflux or varicose veins, adhesive closure may reduce symptoms while avoiding thermal heat inside the vein.

Quick Summary

Key takeaway: VenaSeal uses a small amount of medical adhesive to seal a diseased superficial vein so blood reroutes through healthier veins.

The treatment may be considered for selected patients with venous reflux, varicose veins, leg aching, heaviness, swelling, or related symptoms. Planning depends on ultrasound findings, vein anatomy, symptoms, and overall health.

WHAT IS VENASEAL?

VenaSeal is a vein closure procedure that uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to close a refluxing superficial vein. The adhesive is delivered through a thin catheter placed inside the target vein.

Once the vein is sealed, blood naturally reroutes through nearby healthy veins. Because VenaSeal does not use heat to close the vein, it may require less numbing medication around the vein than thermal treatments such as EVLT or radiofrequency ablation.

VenaSeal is not appropriate for every vein problem. The decision depends on ultrasound mapping, vein size, vein path, symptoms, clot history, allergies, and whether another vein treatment may be better suited.

Who May Be a Good Candidate

A full evaluation helps determine whether VenaSeal is appropriate based on ultrasound findings, symptoms, vein anatomy, clot history, allergies, and overall health.

Conditions Treated

VenaSeal may be considered for selected venous conditions where closing a refluxing superficial vein may reduce pressure and improve symptoms.

Venous Insufficiency

Faulty vein valves can allow blood to pool and raise pressure in the legs.

Varicose Veins

Bulging surface veins may develop when underlying reflux increases venous pressure.

Leg Swelling and Heaviness

Venous reflux can contribute to aching, heaviness, swelling, and fatigue in the legs.

Venous Skin Changes

Long-term venous pressure may contribute to discoloration, irritation, or ulcer risk.

Benefits of Treatment

Benefits depend on ultrasound findings, vein anatomy, symptom cause, adhesive suitability, and follow-up care.

How the Procedure Works / What to Expect

VenaSeal is performed with ultrasound guidance. A catheter is placed inside the target vein, and small amounts of medical adhesive are delivered to seal the diseased vein.

Related Treatments / Alternatives

Depending on vein anatomy, symptoms, and treatment goals, VenaSeal may be considered alongside other vein closure or surface vein treatments.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

A laser-based treatment used to close refluxing superficial veins.

Radiofrequency Ablation

A thermal vein treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to close refluxing veins.

Frequently Asked Questions

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive vein treatment that uses medical adhesive to seal a diseased superficial vein and redirect blood through healthier veins.
VenaSeal uses adhesive closure instead of heat. EVLT uses laser energy, while RFA uses radiofrequency heat to close diseased veins.
VenaSeal may treat selected refluxing superficial veins that contribute to varicose veins, aching, heaviness, swelling, or venous skin changes.
Compression recommendations may vary by patient and treatment plan. Your provider will explain what is needed after the procedure.
Risks may include bruising, inflammation, tenderness, allergic reaction to adhesive, infection, clot formation, incomplete closure, or persistent symptoms.
The best option depends on ultrasound mapping, vein size, vein path, symptoms, clot history, allergies, prior treatment, and overall health.
