Quick Summary
Key takeaway: Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses real-time imaging to place sclerosant medication into selected abnormal veins.
The treatment may be considered for deeper varicose veins, refluxing branch veins, residual veins after ablation, or veins that are difficult to see at the skin surface. Planning depends on ultrasound findings, vein size, vein path, symptoms, and overall health.
WHAT IS ULTRASOUND-GUIDED SCLEROTHERAPY?
Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy is a vein treatment that uses ultrasound imaging to guide an injection into an abnormal vein. The medication irritates the inside of the vein, causing it to close over time.
Unlike surface sclerotherapy, which may be used for visible spider veins or small veins, ultrasound-guided treatment can target veins below the skin that are harder to see or feel.
This treatment is not appropriate for every vein problem. Larger refluxing veins may need EVLT, RFA, VenaSeal, foam treatment, phlebectomy, or another staged vein plan depending on anatomy and symptoms.
