Goiter Ablation

IMAGE-GUIDED THYROID ABLATION

Goiter ablation is a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment used to reduce the size of selected benign thyroid enlargement or nodules contributing to goiter symptoms. For appropriate patients, ablation may help relieve pressure, swallowing discomfort, or visible neck fullness without traditional thyroid surgery.

Quick Summary

Key takeaway: Goiter ablation uses image guidance and heat-based treatment to reduce selected benign thyroid tissue that is causing symptoms or visible enlargement.

The treatment may be considered for benign thyroid nodules or multinodular goiter when symptoms, cosmetic concerns, imaging findings, biopsy results, thyroid function, and overall health support an ablation approach.

WHAT IS GOITER ABLATION?

Goiter ablation is a minimally invasive treatment used to shrink selected benign thyroid enlargement or nodules contributing to a goiter. The procedure is commonly performed with ultrasound guidance and thermal energy, such as radiofrequency ablation.

During treatment, a thin probe is placed into the targeted thyroid tissue. Heat is delivered to the treatment area, causing the tissue to shrink gradually over time while preserving as much normal thyroid tissue as possible.

Goiter ablation is not appropriate for every enlarged thyroid. Large substernal goiters, suspicious or cancerous nodules, severe compressive symptoms, or certain thyroid conditions may require surgery, endocrinology care, or another treatment plan.

Who May Be a Good Candidate

A full evaluation helps determine whether goiter ablation is appropriate based on ultrasound findings, biopsy results, symptoms, thyroid function, anatomy, and overall health.

Conditions Treated

Goiter ablation may be considered when benign thyroid enlargement or nodules are causing symptoms or visible neck changes.

Benign Goiter

Enlarged benign thyroid tissue may cause visible fullness, pressure, or swallowing symptoms.

Multinodular Goiter

Multiple benign nodules may enlarge the thyroid and contribute to compressive symptoms.

Benign Thyroid Nodules

Selected noncancerous thyroid nodules may shrink after image-guided ablation.

Compressive Symptoms

Pressure, swallowing discomfort, or neck fullness may prompt thyroid treatment evaluation.

Benefits of Treatment

Benefits depend on goiter size, nodule type, thyroid function, symptoms, anatomy, and follow-up care.

How the Procedure Works / What to Expect

Goiter ablation is usually performed with ultrasound guidance. A thin probe is placed into the targeted benign thyroid tissue, and controlled heat is used to shrink the treatment area over time.

Related Treatments / Alternatives

Depending on thyroid size, nodule features, symptoms, and biopsy results, goiter ablation may be considered alongside other thyroid or image-guided treatment options.

Thyroid Nodule Ablation

A focused ablation option for selected benign thyroid nodules causing symptoms or cosmetic concern.

Tumor Ablation

An image-guided technique that destroys selected abnormal tissue using heat, cold, or other energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Goiter ablation is a minimally invasive image-guided treatment that uses thermal energy to shrink selected benign thyroid tissue contributing to goiter symptoms.
Candidates may include selected patients with benign thyroid enlargement or nodules causing pressure, swallowing symptoms, or cosmetic concerns.
No. Goiter ablation is generally used for selected benign thyroid tissue. Suspicious or cancerous nodules usually require a different treatment plan.
Thyroid tissue usually shrinks gradually over months. Follow-up ultrasound helps track the treatment response.
Many patients keep normal thyroid function, but thyroid labs and individual risk factors should be reviewed before and after treatment.
Treated tissue may shrink, but untreated nodules or thyroid enlargement can progress over time. Some patients may need monitoring or repeat treatment.
