Quick Summary
Key takeaway: Angioplasty uses a balloon on a catheter to widen a narrowed artery or vein and improve the vessel opening.
The procedure may be used alone or with other treatments such as atherectomy or stenting depending on the blockage, vessel response, symptoms, and overall circulation goals.
WHAT IS ANGIOPLASTY?
Angioplasty is a catheter-based procedure used to open a narrowed or blocked blood vessel. A small balloon is guided to the treatment area and inflated to widen the vessel so blood can flow more easily.
After the balloon is inflated, it is deflated and removed. In some cases, angioplasty is enough by itself. In other cases, a stent may be placed to help hold the vessel open, or atherectomy may be used first to reduce plaque burden.
Angioplasty is not appropriate for every vascular blockage. Treatment planning depends on the vessel involved, blockage length, plaque type, symptoms, imaging findings, and overall health.
