Quick Summary
Key takeaway: VenaSeal uses a small amount of medical adhesive to seal a diseased superficial vein so blood reroutes through healthier veins.
The treatment may be considered for selected patients with venous reflux, varicose veins, leg aching, heaviness, swelling, or related symptoms. Planning depends on ultrasound findings, vein anatomy, symptoms, and overall health.
WHAT IS VENASEAL?
VenaSeal is a vein closure procedure that uses a specially formulated medical adhesive to close a refluxing superficial vein. The adhesive is delivered through a thin catheter placed inside the target vein.
Once the vein is sealed, blood naturally reroutes through nearby healthy veins. Because VenaSeal does not use heat to close the vein, it may require less numbing medication around the vein than thermal treatments such as EVLT or radiofrequency ablation.
VenaSeal is not appropriate for every vein problem. The decision depends on ultrasound mapping, vein size, vein path, symptoms, clot history, allergies, and whether another vein treatment may be better suited.
